General description of the scientific testing ground
According to the currently valid Regulation of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine № 615 "On Approval of the Procedure for Granting Special Permits for Subsoil Use", a separate permit is granted within the territory of Ukraine for each type of subsoil use activities. One of the types is "The creation of geological territories and objects of important scientific, cultural, sanitary and health-related significance (scientific testing grounds, natural geological reserves, wildlife areas, natural monuments, medical and/or health facilities), for their geological study and preservation ".

The KARPATNADRA LLC has applied to the Institute of Geological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and received the Institute's Conclusion, which confirms the possibility of the object's (the Berezhany field's) use for scientific purposes.

Based on the conclusion and the above materials, it was decided to create a scientific testing ground for the study of the prospects of the exploration and development of lenticular gas deposits in the contact zone of the outer zone of the Precarpathian marginal deflection in the southwestern part of the East European (Russian) Platform within the Berezhany field.


The scientific testing ground enables:

- The improvement of the methods (seismic, geochemical) of promising oil and gas deposit exploration in the area by combining the results of the forecast and the actual results in the development process;

- The improvement of the methods of development of such deposits with the simultaneous operation of several horizons within the zone.

The Ukrainian Geological Survey (State Geologic and Subsoil Survey of Ukraine) has granted the KARPATNADRA LLC the Special subsoil use permit № 6354 dated 14.08.2019 for the creation of a scientific testing ground within the Berezhany field, which is located in the Berezhany district of the Ternopil region and which covers an area of 278.9 km².
History of creation
The scientific testing ground, created for the study of the prospects for the search and development of lenticular gas deposits within the Berezhany field, covers an area of 278.9 km² and is located in the Berezhany district of the Ternopil region.

The territory of the scientific testing ground, which is part of the Volyn-Podilsk oil-and-gas-bearing region, has repeatedly been subject of regional and detailed study by way of geological, geophysical and geochemical research.

As early as 1939, geologists began a consistent and systematic study of the geological structure and oil and gas prospects. In 1954, a printed atlas of geological maps of various scales: 1: 100,000, 1: 200,000, 1: 500,000 was published, which retain their significance at present. In the first half of the 20th century, shallow wells were drilled in the western and northwestern parts of the "Berezhany Field" scientific testing ground near the villages of Molokhiv, Kuryany, and Narayiv, from which oil and condensate inflows were obtained.

As for the Ternopil region's oil and gas prospects, it is located in the middle area of the Volyn-Podilsk oil-and-gas-bearing region, which, in turn, constitutes the central element of the vast Baltic-Fore-Dobrudja oil-and-gas-bearing province, covering the entire western edge of the Eastern European platform with a system of pericratonic marginal platform deflections.

In 1972-1973, on the territory of the testing ground, the "Lvivnaftogazrozvidka" (Lviv Oil-Gas Exploration) Trust drilled the 2285m-deep 1-Berezhany structural exploration well, which revealed deposits of Devonian, Silurian, Ordovician, Cambrian and Upper Proterozoic. Gas-saturated layers were found in the section of Silurian, Ordovician and Cambrian, gas logging measuring gas content up to 0.5% (at background values of 0.1-0.2%). Studies of the core material showed increased gas saturation of Silurian deposits down the section from 1.7 cm³/kg to 29.4 cm³/kg, which is 4-7 times higher than the corresponding measurements for the neighboring Zavadiv and Peremyshlyany gas-bearing areas.

According to the results of object testing in the course of drilling in the Cambrian deposits, a gas inflow with an approximate flow rate of 40 thousand m³/day was obtained.

A long-term study of the oil and gas potential of Volyn-Podillya showed that the main prospects in this regard are the following three lithological-stratigraphic complexes: the Cambrian terrigenous, the Silurian carbonate / riphogenic limestones / and Middle Devonian with its underlying Lower Devonian deposits - / cover up to 50m. The Middle Devonian complex proved to be promisingly oil-and-gas-bearing only within the Volyn and Lviv regions, where two gas reservoirs have been discovered: Velyki Mosty / Lviv region / and Lokachi / Volyn region /.

The prospects of the Cambrian complex, which already cover the Ternopil region west of the meridian of the city of Ternopil, are broader in terms of area.

Biohermic Silurian / reef / formations are associated mainly with oil resources and are projected in the aforementioned strip along the Strypa River.
The purpose of the scientific testing ground
The purpose of this subsoil use is to create a scientific testing ground within the Berezhany field for the study of the prospects of exploration and development of lenticular gas deposits in the contact zone of the outer zone of the Precarpathian marginal deflection in the southwestern part of the East European Platform.

The scientific testing ground — the Berezhany field, as per administrative division, is situated in the Berezhany district of the Ternopil region, 50 km southwest of Ternopil, and is located at the following geographical coordinates:

The issuance of a special permit for subsoil use was reconciled with the Ternopil Regional Council and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine and recommended for use as a scientific testing ground by the Institute of Geological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
